The basic Langendorff Isolated Heart System BL-IH is a ready to use isolated heart perfusion system for rodent hearts such as mouse, rat and guinea pig. This system is based on our premium IH-SR isolated heart system for constant flow or pressure perfusion. To achieve constant pressure perfusion, the BL-IH utilizes our SCP Controller module. The SCP module in combination with a pressure transducer, an amplifier and peristaltic pump controls the perfusion pressure. The complete system includes the perfusion apparatus, the transducers and amplifiers for perfusion pressure, the servo controller and integrated peristaltic pump, the isovolumetric left ventricular pressure measurement (isovolumetric balloon method) using a second pressure transducer and amplifier and a data acquisition system. The apparatus by design is constructed to be very compact. All of the components are mounted on a basic Plexiglas stand except for the thermostatic circulator and the measuring instruments. Special attention has been made to ensure constant and defined temperature conditions at the heart. All critical parts in this respect are arranged inside the thermostated heart chamber, thus avoiding any cooling through a temperature gradient to ambient temperature. Additional recording or pacing electrodes can be arranged aroung the aortic bloc. The large thermostated space arround the heart allows easy placement of these additional measurement systems.
The connection to the heart is made through interchangeable aortic cannulae. The perfusate is aerated by bubbling in the reservoir. When using perfusates tending to foam or with certain additives it is possible to use an optional membrane oxygenator. The BL-IH is optimized and intended only for Langendorff heart perfusion. The system is simple to setup and use and is available for mouse, rat, and/or guinea pig hearts. The use of the SCP module allows continuous recording of flow rate without an expensive flowmeter.

The following signals are recorded:
- Isovolumetric left ventricular pressure (Balloon)
- dLVP/dt
- Perfusion pressure
- Perfusion flow
The software evaluates the following parameters:
- Systolic and diastolic LVP
- Heart rate
- dP/dt max, dP/dt min, Contractility index
- Mean perfusion pressure
- Mean perfusion flow
- Coronary resistance
