The HSE pneumotachometer (PTM) type 378/X is a transducer for airflow measurement. It is especially designed for respiratory flow measurement on isolated lung of rats, guinea pigs or mice. In combination with the silicon rubber tubing and the tracheal cannula the PTM can also be used for acute experiments (tracheotomy). The main feature of the new design is the small dead space. The PTM is made of transparent perspex, this allows a good view of the inside during the experiment or the cleaning. If during the experiment mucus comes up into the PTM it’s easy to detect and prevent for measurement errors caused by artificial increasing of the airway resistance due to PTM obstruction. In addition the perspex has the advantage over metall to present low temperature conductivity so that no heating is needed to prevent from condensation of the moisture of the expired air. The flow resistance consists only of straight boring and is therefore easy to clean.
The basic principle of the transducer is the generation of a pressure proportional to the airflow across a flow resistance. For the measurement of the pressure we recommend the VALIDYNE differential pressure transducer type DP 45-14.
