The cage has a two-part feeding chamber located outside of the cage itself. The front chamber catches spilled food so there is no possibility of food/waste contamination. The water bottle has a special drain to collect overflow while the animal is drinking and diverts it into a collection tube separate from the waste collection tubes. The feeding drawers slide out easily, allowing for removal without interrupting the study.
The 72-9061 Mouse Metabolic Cage comes complete with the following components:
- Cone
- Separation cone
- Urine collection ring
- Collection tubes for feces and urine (2)
- Upper chamber with lid
- Lower chamber with closure
- Water bottle
- Tube for water spillage
Components #1 to 4 are made of polymethylpentene (PMP) while components #5 to 8 are made of polycarbonate.
The cage can be used without a cage stand, but it is recommended that one be used. Use of a stand facilitates easy access to all of the collection tubes without having to physically lift the cage and disturb the animal. If you choose to use the cage stand or a multiple cage rack, it is necessary to also purchase the 72-9062 support plate.
